As all of us know, disasters are terrible. They can rob people of the basic necessities of life -- things like food, shelter, health or a way to earn a living. In a matter of minutes, they can devastate an entire community. There is much that can be done to prevent or reduce the impact of disasters, the loss and suffering - to manage emergencies and disasters.

The Department of Emergency Management works to reduce risks, strengthen support systems and help people and their communities prepare for and cope with disasters regardless of the cause. We accomplish this through what is known as mitigation, which is simply the ongoing effort to lessen the impact disasters have on people and property.  They also work with Fire, Medical, Law Enforcement, Utilities, Industry, Schools, Business and others to develop and test emergency response plans.
